Tecnologías emergentes para la segunda transición energética: Celdas de óxido sólido para un futuro sostenible
This project focuses on the development of high-performance nanoceramics for clean energy generation with H2, while exploring other strategies for mitigating climate change. It will rely on heterogeneous catalysis applied to Solid Oxide Cell (SOC) technology, allowing for efficient energy generation with both hydrogen and methane, natural gas, biogas, etc., in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) mode or hydrogen generation by water electrolysis in Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) mode. The goal is to develop new electrode, electrolyte, and catalyst materials that are more affordable, operate at lower temperatures, and are resistant to degradation (sulfur and carbon formation resistance in SOFCs operating with natural gas or biogas), to promote the rapid adoption of this technology. The project will also include the development of nanocatalysts similar to cell electrodes for the upgrading of biogas through dry reforming, transforming it into synthesis gas, an industrially significant fuel. To understand the functioning of the proposed nanomaterials, the project focuses on the development of advanced instrumentation for the new Sirius synchrotron (National Synchrotron Light Laboratory, CNPEM, Campinas, Brazil), where the QUATI beamline is being constructed, dedicated to multiple simultaneous techniques allowing studies under similar atmospheric and temperature conditions (in-situ) and under operating conditions (operando). In addition to experimental measurements, first-principles calculations will be used to model reactions and elucidate occurring phenomena. Therefore, this project will not only contribute to the development of clean energy through new materials for the second energy transition but also lead to new advanced instrumentation available for use in Sirius for the entire Latin American community. With the best materials, the aim is to build a pilot plant for energy generation using H2 or hydrocarbons, disseminating this technology among participating groups.
